2018
has been a very eventful year for Mathew West. West had his first gig in Green
Note in January and has became a household name for jazz fans in under a year.
With the EFG London Jazz Festival kicking off in under a week Mathew West is
set up to be a fan favourite with a highly anticipated concert at Kings Place
in Kings Cross on the 19th of November. The All That Jazz team reviewed
his recent gig in Café Oto. See review page 9. Mathew
West turned 19 in July and is already well established in the North London jazz
scene. This will be West’s debut London Jazz Festival and a big milestone for
his career. We spoke with West to address the upcoming Jazz Festival.
a
boyhood dream to participate in what is the most highly anticipated jazz event
in the world."
ATJ:
Your gig in Kings Place is expected to be a highlight in this years EFG London
Jazz Festival after a series of electric performances throughout 2018. A lot of
pressure for a 19 year old! Will nerves play a part?
West:
“It’s a boyhood dream to participate in what is the most highly anticipated
jazz event in the world. This gig is a very big deal for me and will
undoubtedly be full of emotion. However I believe my experience over the last
year has prepared me for this moment and I’m confident in myself going into the
gig.”
ATJ:
we saw you in Café Otto and the audience spoke for themselves as they appeared
to be deeply engaged throughout the night and exploded into applause at the end
of the performance. You’ve developed a fan-base of people who both admire you
as an artist and have followed your personal story as you launched into
mainstream jazz. Do you expect any different from the audience at Kings place?
West:
“throughout my teenage life I’ve
became more and more familiar with Kings place as an audience member and I’ve
spent every London jazz festival since I discovered the genre watching my idols
perform in Kings place. The idea that I will be performing in Kings place for
this years London Jazz Festival is very surreal for me. Of course I
appreciate that Kings place as a venue is a level above anything I’m used to,
I’m not sure what to expect from the audience. The support I’ve got over the
last year has been extraordinary, and that’s helped me a lot, I can only hope
that the audience in Kings place have the same sort of reaction.”
ATJ:
2018 has been a very eventful year for you and your contribution to the EFG
London Jazz Festival should be an epic way to end to the year. What can we
expect from you in 2019?
West:
“I’m working on some projects at
the moment. I’m trying different things to help me grow as an artist. I’m very
proud with how they’re going. I’m planning to release my debut album in the
next 6 months. I’m very excited about that, I want this album to be different
from anything I’ve released before. I feel like I’ve already made a name for
myself in north London and I would like to expand my music on a global scale.
I’m planning to tour around the states. The US is the most respected country in
jazz and has produced a lot of the people who inspired me.”
The
Festival kicks off on the 16th of November and ends on the 25th.
Mathew West’s concert at Kings Place on the 19th is considered the
main event of this years EFG London jazz festival. The concert will be in hall
one, which seats a total of 415 people, with 113 balcony seats and 302 stalls.
Tickets will be on sale in a week and are expected to sell at a very quick rate,
so we recommend you to get one while you can! Mathew West will also make an
appearance at the Blues Kitchen on the 25th to conclude this year’s
London Jazz Festival. Kings Place
is one of the most prestigious venues in north London and only hosts an elite
group of artists. Despite a successful 2018, the concert in Kings Place could
be vital for West’s career as it will establish him in elite level jazz and
attract mainstream attention. This concert has a lot of personal significance
for West as well as the community of jazz fans across north London.
PHOTOS FROM PHOTOSHOOTS
GOOD
I chose this idea because I think the artist in the snow creates an interesting concept. I chose this specific image because the lighting from the sun on the snow creates a dramatic mood and compliments the artist. I think the natural lighting was captured in this image better than in others.
I chose this idea because I think that it's important to capture the artist in the environment he would perform or practice in. I chose this specific image because it captured the emotion of the artist better than in others.

CODES AND CONVENTIONS
Costume
The artist is dressed in a casual smart outfit with a buttoned shirt and a fur coat. This is typical for jazz as jazz artists traditionally wear smart clothes (appropriate for jazz bars). The coat represents the artists youth as it's informal and therefore could be considered a less mature style. The coat along with the buttoned shirt creates an unconventional outfit that showcases the artists character.
Location
I chose the outdoor location in the snow as it creates an interesting concept that immediately attracts attention from consumers. Furthermore, the natural lighting through the clouds and the trees in the background create an aesthetically pleasing scene that compliments the artist. I chose the indoor location with the artist in a room next to a drum kit and a keyboard as the image defines the genre and reveals the artist in the appropriate environment.
Facial Expression & Body Language
The artist is playing the saxophone in the images and his face appears intensely engaged, this demonstrates his passion for jazz. The artist is standing in the images and looks confident and clearly has a talent for playing the Saxophone.
